``ONE WORLD`` Application

HCI 430 Prototyping and Implementation Project - DePaul University

ONE WORLD connects people around the world through a single question. It asks everyone who has signed onto the app a question each day, and it amasses that information to share it. It is an outlet for people to connect across the globe to share in a civil discourse. It cures the curiosity curse many of us have about what others are thinking on subjects that are important to us not only at home, but abroad.

We provide a daily topic, and the users will vote “yes, no or impartial” and share where they are in the world based on GPS location.  There will be no usernames or comments, but only pins collected and displayed on a world map. Users will not have the opportunity to comment; the app  intends to invite all opinions without the negativity of comment boards. It provides more detailed information by country, and in potential later versions would share further statistical information about topics.

Analysis

Since we knew that the application was fairly straight forward in its purpose, we began the project by creating 2 sketch storyboard artifacts for a unique user and the application.  By doing this exercise we could understand better the user flow we would design next.

Content

Next, we conducted 8 interviews and created an online survey to create unique personas that would use the application for very different purposes.

  • The first persona would be a reporter using the app for statistical research.
  • The second would be a casual user basically using it for fun.

We then created 2 paper prototypes to begin to layout the interface and the user flow for each scenario.

Next, we digitally created mobile wire frames in Illustrator to add more specific content to the two happy paths as seen in the gallery below.  We were happy with the direction and were ready for prototyping.

Prototyping

We created a responsive medium fidelity prototype in Axure with a few happy paths that were relative to our two personas.  Because this class was mostly concerned with prototyping, we took on the task of creating interactive paths for mobile, tablet and desktop interfaces.  The tablet interface was quite similar to the desktop, so that was omitted from the galleries below.

User Testing and Results

We tested our prototype with 7 females, 5 males, aged between 23-50. They are all well-educated and worked in a range of industries — education, investment banking, medicine, digital strategy.

Through these tests, we uncovered there were quite a few features that were consistently confusing for the user as documented in the gallery below.

Visual Design

We felt after these user tests that the application was overall successful, but possibly needed further testing with different demographics before moving on to high fidelity.  The last requirement of the course was to create a visual style guide for the application.
